In 1886, Isaac Albeniz composed four works for piano (Granada, Cataluña, Sevilla, and Cuba) which he grouped together a year later into his Suite Española No. 1 in honour of the Queen of Spain, Maria Christina. Each piece represents a different region and style of music (Cuba was still a colony of Spain until the Spanish–American War of 1898). The third piece from the set, Sevilla, is based on the Sevillana song and dance style which has origins in southern Andalusia and Seville. It is a festival dance which is often used as a stepping stone for dancers who intend to learn flamenco.
