"This work for bass clarinet solo was written for Harry Sparnaay and dedicated to my friend Jose Luis Garcia del Busto. The title referring to fossils has a particular appeal to me not related to these persons. The bass clarinet is a relatively modern instrument that has an archaic sonority, from an ancient time, specially in its "more contemporary" registers. Trilobites have always been very interesting to me. As a young child, I certainly should have only been interested in dinosaurs, but I have to declare that I was always much more interested in trilobites; maybe because it was possible to hold a trilobite on my palm, a stone witness of a time when the lack of predators allowed this species to inhabit the sea. This work has three movements, each with approximately the same duration. The first and third movements approach intervals through a different perspective by alternating two Indian scales: Sindhura (mode in D) and Marva, but not relating them to an exotic raga reference. The second movement uses a different material, referring to a past time which reminds me about a personal experience. I could have entitled the work "sonatina", but this term sounds more archaic than trilobites. . ."
