Pian Zhou for Clarinet Solo, by Yuji Yao. Recognized as the Honorable Mention composition by the New Music Committee of the International Clarinet Association as part of the 2022 Composition Competition. From the composer: "This piece was inspired by Chi Bi Fu written by Su Shi, a Chinese poet. It is divided into three movements. In this work, I try to combine the essential music materials with the unique timbre of the clarinet. In the music, I emphasize the contrast between the light and dark relationship of timbre, and the use of pitch is to add 'disharmony' to the basis of traditional pentatonic Chinese Music, thus supporting the whole piece forcefully. The piece is dedicated to my friend Ennan Sun, who is a talented clarinetist."
