Bob-ing Around is written for B-flat clarinet and Bass clarinet. Commissioned by the Cactus Duo, this piece was premiered at ClarinetFest 2021in honor of Dr. Robert Spring’s induction as an honorary member of the International Clarinet Association. Each movement represents a different aspect of being a student of Dr. Spring. Beginning with a flashy opening, the first movement displays the technical and virtuosic playing he instills in his students. The middle movement is a nod to the warm-up rituals familiar with his students. The piece ends with a sort of ode to Michigan. Bob-ing Around is technically demanding and uses the extended ranges of both instruments.
