Johann Melchior Pachelbel - Canon in D arranged for Woodwind Quintet by Robert Wall. Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D was composed around 1680, probably for three violins and basso continuo, and is one of the best-known works of the German Baroque period. The piece is built over a repeating eight-note bass pattern, above which the three violins enter successively with variations on the same melodic material. Although its original popularity is difficult to establish, the canon became widely celebrated in the twentieth century and is now frequently performed at weddings, ceremonies, and other formal occasions.
