Franz Schubert - The Shepherd on the Rock (Der Hirt auf dem Felsen) for Voice, Clarinet, and Piano. Franz Schubert’s “The Shepherd on the Rock” (D. 965) is a late and remarkable work that blends elements of Lied (art song) with chamber music. Composed in October 1828, just a few weeks before Schubert’s death, it is one of his final completed compositions. Schubert wrote this work at the request of Anna Milder-Hauptmann, a celebrated soprano (who had sung the role of Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio). She wanted a concert piece that could show off both her vocal range and expressive abilities, with the added attraction of a clarinet obbligato. Schubert fulfilled this brilliantly! Includes a Singing Score, Performance Score for the pianist, and Clarinet part.
