This embodiment of an ancient description is so relative today with daily reminders that through climate change the Earth is experiencing more violent and destructive storms.

In this work you’ll hear this storm coming across the plains. It begins with the calm before the storm – hazy sunlight represented by the vibraphone and the crotales (played by the clarinetist). Eventually this beautiful, hazy day begins to grow darker as ominous clouds form in the distance. The instruments begin to grow wilder and more frantic as the wind picks up, sending dust and particles through the air. Finally, the storm arrives with wild, almost didgeridoo-like sounds in the clarinet, wild gestures racing up and down the marimba, and a sense that everything will fall apart. Eventually, hail begins to fall, represented by key clicks in the bass clarinet and piercing pitches from the glockenspiel as the hail falls from the sky. And just as the storm suddenly appeared, it begins to dissipate: the hail and rain stop, the clouds begin to clear, and we are left with the clear sky and air after a storm represented by the return of the vibraphone and crotales.

It was an honor to write this work for the 2022 Ears to the Earth concert in Lawrence, Kansas created by Luke Helker. They appear April-July and November-January when currents change and bring plankton and nutrients up from deeper waters. The clarinet uses its ability to dynamically appear from nothing, emulating a shadow of movement in a sea of blue. As the Mobula Ray begins to come closer and “appears out of the depths”, we begin to see it take shape and take a few leaps out of the water with the technique of the timbral trill representing hanging in the air before falling back into the water. The Ray continues to swim around, and eventually the lone Ray is joined by other Rays “like popcorn – leaping in and out of the water”. Our spider lands gently and immediately begins to make his web in “Spinning Song.” Once the web is spun, it is time to wait for dinner to come along. Our spider dances “A Wicked Waltz,” laughing manically as he waits for the “Happy Bug (unsuspecting)” to get stuck in his web. Intrigue. Murder… Welcome to the gritty world of a 1940s detective, where shadows run long and motives run deep. A woman with unfathomable eyes walks into his office. Her sister has been kidnapped. Her husband? Gone—along with the ransom money. The detective takes the case, drawn in by her beauty and tangled in her lies. As he chases the husband and the cash from the streets of Southern California to the dust and danger of Baja, Mexico, the truth unspools like smoke from a cigarette—and by the time he uncovers her real motives, it might be too late. Inspired by the hardboiled fiction of Raymond Chandler and his iconic detective Philip Marlowe, I envisioned a piece for narrator and ensemble that would immerse listeners in this noir world. It was while taking walks on the beach during the winter of 2013 in Long Beach, California when I spotted a black feather on the sand and wondered about its story. Where was the bird it came from? Where had the bird travelled and how had that feather helped in this flight? As I began to see more objects on the beach- stones, shells, driftwood, even sea glass during those winter afternoons- I thought about their stories and how I might tell them.

In "Tumbled Stones", the ocean tosses and tumbles the stones in the waves, creating smooth stones, angular stones, and patterned stones through years of being in the ocean and on the sandy ocean floor. The Sea Glass solo movements tell of the beautiful colors of tumbled pieces of glass, tossed much like the stones by the sea. Once part of a jar or bottle, these pieces of glass now reflect smoothness that comes from years of the ocean's effects.

Also on the beach that winter was a gnarled, twisted, dark brown pieces of driftwood. I imagined this piece of wood, drifting sadly on a lonely, cold sea. In "Driftwood", the movement ebbs and flows with the tide, the wood coming to rest on the sand near a black feather which remembers its joyful, soaring flight.

In the final movement "Seashells" a joyful waltz tells the story of these beautiful, varied shells; colorful and scattered across the beach as far as the eye can see.
